Change Facial Expression with AI: Add a Smile, Open the Eyes, Fix the Look
The best photo of the day, and one person is frowning into the sun. The take where everything worked except a glance away from the lens. Face Studio’s Expression edit fixes moments like these with nine sliders — smile, eyes, mouth, eyebrows, three head movements and two for the gaze — on a photo or a video, for one face or everyone in it. Move a slider, compare the result with the original, and keep it.

The 9 expression sliders
Each slider moves one feature either way from where it is now. Leave a slider in the middle and that feature is left alone.
Smile
From a frown to a smile — the one most people come for.
Eyes
From closed to wide open.
Mouth
From closed to open.
Eyebrows
Down for a serious look, raised for surprise.
Turn the head
To the left or to the right.
Nod the head
Down or up.
Tilt the head
Towards one shoulder or the other.
Look sideways
Move the gaze to the left or the right.
Look up or down
Move the gaze up or down — back towards the lens, for instance.
How to change a facial expression in a photo
Five steps, the same for a video.
Choose Expression and add the picture
Upload a photo or a video, or paste a link to a video you made or have permission to use.
Pick the face
Up to 8 people are found. Tap the one to change, or leave nobody picked to change every face the same way.
Move a slider
Start with one, usually Smile or Eyes. Combine a few for a whole new expression; Reset every slider takes you back to the start.
Preview a frame
On a video, preview one frame before you change the whole clip.
Compare and keep
Drag the before-and-after slider across the face, then download or share the result.
Fix the group photo
The classic job: six people, one good shot, and one of them not smiling or looking away. Pick only that person, nudge Smile or the gaze, and leave everyone else exactly as they were.
If someone’s eyes are fully shut, the Eyes slider has little to work with and the result may not convince. Then the better route is Swap: save that person’s face from another photo of the same moment and swap it in — with their permission.
More reasons to change an expression
Small fixes, mostly — the kind a reshoot would cost far more than.
A friendlier profile photo
A touch more smile on a photo you otherwise like.
Eyes on the camera
Bring a sideways glance back towards the lens with the two gaze sliders.
A reaction shot
Raise the brows, open the mouth, turn the head — a surprised face of your own for a meme or a Short.
Direct a scene after the shoot
Adjust an actor’s expression in a clip of your short film, with the actor’s agreement.
Tips for a believable expression
Expressions look most real when the change is modest.
Small moves first
A slight change usually reads as natural; the extremes can look stretched.
Smile with the eyes too
A real smile shows in the eyes as well, so a little Eyes with a little Smile often beats a lot of Smile alone.
Mind the size
Use a picture at least 256 pixels on its shorter side, with the face reasonably large and sharp.
Sharpen, then edit
A soft or noisy face? Run Enhance first, then change the expression on the sharper copy.
The same rules as every face edit
Expression follows Face Studio’s terms: your own face, an adult who gave you permission, or a face that is not a real person. The terms forbid sexual content and using an edit to deceive, and faces that appear to be minors are refused.
Every result carries an invisible watermark and a C2PA content credential saying it was edited with AI. A run that fails or is blocked costs nothing.
