Remove Objects from Photos: Paint Over It, and It Is Gone

Brush over what should not be there — a stranger in the background, a bin, a wire, a sign — and Image Studio removes it and fills the space with what was around it. Everything you did not paint stays as it was, and the photo keeps its own size. Want something else there instead? Describe it, or give it a picture of your own to place. Each new picture costs 2 credits, and a picture that is blocked or fails costs nothing.

  • Editing and exports are free

How to remove an object from a photo

Four steps, on a phone or a computer.

  1. Add the photo

Upload a JPEG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC photo of up to 20 MB, or pick one from your gallery.

  2. Choose Inpaint, then Remove

Inpaint has two tools: Change, to put something new in the area, and Remove, to make it disappear.

  3. Paint over it

Brush over the object and a little around it. Make the brush bigger or smaller, rub out with the eraser, undo and redo.

  4. Press Erase

The painted area is filled in with the background around it, so it looks as if nothing was ever there. Not quite right? More like this tries again with a new seed.

Remove, change or replace: three ways to fix one area

The brush decides where; the tool decides what happens there.

  • Remove

For a stray person, a car, a bin, a wire or a stain. The area is filled with what should be behind it.

  • Change

Describe what goes in the painted area instead — “a potted plant”, “an empty bench”, “blue sky” — and only that area is redrawn.

  • Replace with a picture

In the layer editor, select the area and add a picture of your own: a product, a logo, a screenshot. Two ways to do it, below.

  • Invert

Paint the one thing to keep and invert the brush, and everything else is changed instead.

Replace it with your own picture

Select an area in the layer editor and add a picture from your gallery or your device. If the selection is a flat four-sided surface — a phone screen, a sign, a poster, a box — Place exactly draws your picture onto it in perspective, masked to its edges and matched to the light around it, with corner pins to nudge it into place. It runs on your device, never redraws your picture, and it is free; add a faint screen glare for a phone or a monitor.

Not a flat surface — a hand, a shelf, a table? Use as reference fills the selection with the AI, guided by your picture and a few words such as “held in her hand”. That makes a new picture, at 2 credits.

Tips for a clean removal

Most removals work first time. These help with the rest.

  • Paint a little past the edges

Cover the object’s shadow and reflection too, or a ghost of it stays behind.

  • Big things in a few passes

A large area is harder to fill believably. Remove it in two or three strokes, from the edges in.

  • Say what should be there

If Remove guesses wrong, switch to Change and describe the background: “wet sand and sea”, “brick wall”.

  • Tidy the whole picture

For general mess, Edit’s Remove clutter quick edit tidies the background in one go, without painting.

What it costs

You pay for the new picture, not for the brush.

  • 2 credits a picture

Remove, Change and Use as reference each make one new picture, its price on the button before you press it.

  • Very large photos

An edit that keeps a very large photo at its full resolution can add a detail charge on top of the price per picture, for the sharper finish.

  • Nothing for a failed picture

Credits are held while the picture is made and charged only when it is ready. A picture that is blocked by the content rules, fails or is stopped costs nothing.

  • Place exactly and editing are free

Placing your own picture, layers, text, adjustments and exports never cost credits.

What not to erase

Use photos you took or have the right to use. Do not remove watermarks, credits or logos from pictures that are not yours, and do not edit a photo of a real person to mislead anyone.

Every new picture is checked against the content rules before it is shown or charged; a picture that breaks them is blocked and costs nothing.
