Outpaint to 11 shapes or by side · original kept · 2 credits a picture

AI Image Extender: Make Any Photo Wider or Taller

Your photo is square and you need a story. It is a portrait and you need a banner. Cropping throws away what matters; Extend adds what is missing. Pick the shape it should become — from a 9:16 story to a 32:9 panorama — or how far each side should grow, and Image Studio paints the new edges to continue the scene in the same light and perspective, keeping your original part as it was. Add a few words if you want something particular at the edges. Each new picture costs 2 credits; one that is blocked or fails costs nothing.

  • Nothing charged for a failed picture

How to extend an image with AI

Four steps, from any photo in your gallery or on your device.

  1. Add your photo

Upload a JPEG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC photo of up to 20 MB, or pick one from your gallery.

  2. Choose Extend

Then choose how: To a shape, or By side.

  3. Pick the shape or the sides

To a shape offers 11 shapes, leaving out the one your photo already has. By side grows the left, right, top and bottom separately — each by up to the photo’s own width or height — or all by the same amount.

  4. Extend

If you like, say what should appear at the edges — “more of the beach and the sky” — and press Extend. Your original stays in the middle, untouched, and the new picture is saved to your gallery.

The right shape for every place a picture goes

Choose the shape for where the picture is going, and nothing has to be cropped away.

  • 9:16 for stories, Reels and Shorts

A landscape or square photo becomes a full-screen vertical one, with more sky above and more ground below.

  • 4:5 and 1:1 for feed posts

Give a cramped photo room to breathe before you post it.

  • 16:9 for thumbnails, slides and wallpapers

Turn a portrait into a wide frame with space beside the subject for words.

  • 3:1, 21:9 and 32:9 for banners and headers

Very wide shapes for a website header, a cover photo or a panorama.

  • 2:3, 3:4, 3:2 and 4:3 for prints

The classic photo and print shapes, either way round.

Extend by side when only one edge is short

Sometimes the shape is fine and the subject is just too close to an edge: a head touching the top, a product hard against the side. By side grows only the edges you choose, by as much as you choose, so the subject gets room on one side for words or for a cleaner composition.

Same on all sides adds an even margin all round: useful before a print crop, or to pull back from a tight close-up.

Tips for a natural extension

The new edges follow your photo. A few words steer them.

  • Leave the words out for more of the same

With no words, the scene simply continues: more sky, more floor, more street.

  • Describe what should be there

Words steer the new edges: “a window on the left”, “the beach runs down to the sea”.

  • Go wide in steps

For a very wide result, extend part of the way, then extend the new picture again.

  • Clean up first

Remove a distracting object with Inpaint before you extend, so the new edges continue a clean scene.

Then finish it in the editor

Open the result in the free layer editor to add text and shapes, adjust the colour and crop, and export a PNG, JPEG or WebP of up to 8,192 pixels on the long side. If the extended picture needs to be bigger, Upscale makes it twice or four times the size.

What it costs

You pay for the extended picture, nothing else.

  • 2 credits a picture

Every extension is one new picture, its price on the button before you press it.

  • Very large photos

Extending a very large photo keeps its pixel density, and that sharper finish can add a detail charge on top of the price per picture.

  • Nothing for a failed picture

Credits are held while the picture is made and charged only when it is ready; a blocked, failed or stopped picture costs nothing.

  • Editing and exporting are free

Text, shapes, adjustments, crops and exports in the layer editor never cost credits.

The content rules

Extend photos you took or have the right to use. Every new picture is checked against the content rules before it is shown or charged; a picture that breaks them is blocked and costs nothing.

Questions

A tool that makes a picture bigger on the outside: it adds new image around your photo — wider, taller or on one side — and paints it to continue the scene. It is also called outpainting or uncropping.

Pick the shape. Keep the photo. Let the edges fill in.
